Starting kindergarten

Starting school is a big step for children and families. Our school runs orientation and transition activities to help your child feel ready for kindergarten and to support you as parents and carers.

Before your child starts kindergarten

Before your child starts school we offer opportunities to help your family feel confident and connected, including school tours, kindergarten parent information sessions and kindergarten orientation.

Our orientation sessions help children:

• meet teachers
• explore classrooms and playgrounds
• practise simple routines

Parents and carers join information sessions to learn about daily schedules, uniforms, lunches and communication.

• The information included in this webinar will assist parents to prepare their children for school and is designed to provide a broad overview of life at Double Bay Public School.

School experience program for children and Information session for parents

• This program is designed to develop an understanding of what being at school is like.

  All children who are starting school next year will be invited to attend our Kindergarten Transition Sessions in Term 3 and the Orientation Program in Term 4.

Kindergarten 2027 transition dates

• Wednesday 19^th August- Students with surname A-K, 9:15am -10:30am.

• Thursday 20^th August- Students with surname L-Z, 9:15am -10:30am

  - A parent morning tea will take place during the transition sessions for parents to meet other families commencing school here at Double Bay.

Kindergarten 2027 orientation dates

• Wednesday 4^th November- Students with surname A-K, 9:15am -10:30am.

• Thursday 5^th November- Students with surname L-Z, 9:15am -10:30am.

School experience program for students

These programs are designed for the children.

Your child will spend the morning participating in school activities designed to familiarise them with school life. These activities will include:

• Transition Sessions-Meet the Teachers, meet their Year 6 Buddies, an introduction to the Kindergarten classrooms, stationed activities for students to get to meet other students and a morning tea with parents.
• Orientation Sessions- Meet the Teachers, reconnect with Year 6 buddies, participate in more structured classroom activities and engage in a tour of the school.

What to expect in kindergarten

Learning and development

Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.

Daily routines

Children learn routines such as morning arrival, snack and lunch breaks, lining up, using bubblers and moving safely around the school. Teachers guide children as they settle in, but practising at home helps.

Best start assessment

At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation.

Getting ready at home

You can help your child get ready by encouraging independence and routines. Try:

• packing and unpacking their school bag
• dressing themselves and practising hygiene
• following simple routines at home.
